IDS is a multi-disciplinary, project-based approach to teaching and learning that employs a design process rooted in empathy, collaboration, discovery and action to develop projects that ignite change within our community. Our big idea with the IDS is to design and build a small, but significant, piece of architecture in Newberg each year that addresses a current issue. Whatever the project happens to be, students will use the design process to achieve genuinely original results, actively engage with their community, and experience deep learning of academic content. The IDS team consists of designer Matt Miller, a math/computer science teacher (and Make-a-thon alum), and a theatre/humanities teacher. The IDS makerspace is the old wood-shop, reimagined, sharing the adjacent machine shop and PLTW engineering lab. Targeting 10th-12th graders, IDS students are reflective of the Newberg community writ large: thinkers and makers, designers and builders, hackers and hipsters, future plumbers and physicians.
